St. Anthony's Hospital Earns Fourth Consecutive Gold Plus Stroke Award
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., (July 22, 2013) – For the fourth consecutive year, St. Anthony's Hospital has been recognized for providing quality care to stroke patients with the Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award" from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

"It is an honor to be recognized for the fourth year in a row. The award is a tangible example of our commitment to excellence in stroke care," said Bill Ulbricht, St. Anthony's Hospital president. "With a stroke, time lost equals brain lost, so our goal is to treat stroke patients quickly and effectively with quality care using evidence-based protocols."

According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the United States. A stroke occurs every 40 seconds and approximately 795,000 Americans suffer from a new or reoccurring stroke each year.

A stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain and occurs when a blood vessel that carries nutrients and oxygen to the brain is blocked. To learn if you are at risk for a stroke, a free seven-minute stroke risk assessment is available at

St. Anthony’s Hospital earned the Gold Plus recognition by achieving 85 percent or higher adherence to all "Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Achievement" indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals. The hospital also achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 "Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Measures," which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.

Get with The Guidelines — Stroke uses measures that include aggressive use of several medications and smoking cessation aimed at reducing death and disability; uses the "teachable moment" to demonstrate to patients how to manage their risk factors while in the hospital to reduce their risk of a second stroke or heart attack; provides patient education materials at point of discharge, based on patients' individual risk profiles and allows heath care providers access to up-to-date cardiovascular and stroke science at the point of care.

Get With The Guidelines® is the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s hospital-based quality improvement program that empowers healthcare teams to save lives and reduce healthcare costs by helping hospitals follow evidence-based guidelines and recommendations.
